It’s a new month, so that means new movies and television shows hitting Netflix! The streamer is looking to have a huge September 2024. On the movie side, we have a fearsome trio, including a festival acquisition, a new release from a modern auteur, and an original film in the YA mold. Moreover, on the TV side of things, there’s an embarrassment of riches with several high-profile series either returning or premiering on the streaming giant. Without further ado, let’s take a look at what Netflix has to offer in September 2024.
First on the docket for the streaming service is the Netflix original film, Rebel Ridge. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, the acclaimed filmmaker behind A24‘s Green Room as well as Netflix’s own Hold the Dark from 2018, the movie follows Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre) in his uncovering of a vast local conspiracy spearheaded by corrupt police chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson) in the small town of Shelby Springs. Just like Hold the Dark before it, Rebel Ridge promises to be a uniquely cinematic experience for the streamer when it arrives on September 6, 2024.
The next notable Netflix original film on this month’s slate is Uglies, which hits the streaming platform on September 13, 2024. Lead actress Joey King is no stranger to Netflix movies, having starred in the highly successful The Kissing Booth trilogy. Uglies is an entirely different beast; based on the novel by the same name by Scott Westerfield, the story centers around a post-apocalyptic society where at 16 years old, teenagers or “uglies” as they’re called until they reach that age, get transformed by cosmetic surgery into “pretties.” Given the overwhelming success of in 2023, it’s a savvy move for Netflix to zero in on the YA market, and the concept alone is enough to intrigue subscribers to click play.
Last on the list of prominent Netflix film premieres in September 2024 is His Three Daughters. The indie drama follows, as the title would suggest, three sisters, played by Carrie Coon, Natasha Lyonne, and Elizabeth Olsen. After a long time of estrangement, they reunite to provide care for their sick father (Jay O. Sanders). A hit at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival,His Three Daughterswas snatched up by Netflix shortly afterward, as word-of-mouth described it as an exceptional showcase for the three lead stars. Following a limited theatrical stint on September 6, His Three Daughters will make its Netflix streaming debut on September 20, 2024.
Moving on to TV shows, the first high-profile Netflix original series about to drop is The Perfect Couple. Based on Elin Hilderbrand’s novel of the same name, the Netflix show follows an engaged couple (Eve Hewson and Benji Howle) who are set to marry when a body washes up on the beach. The groom’s parents, played by Nicole Kidman and Liev Schreiber, become central figures as their disapproval of the bride comes into question during the grisly murder investigation. Netflix’s The Perfect Couple debuts on September 5, 2024.
Up next, Emily in Paris Season 4 Part 2 starts streaming on September 12, 2024. Created by Sex and the City scribe Darren Star, the Netflix original series has remained a tantalizing piece of vicarious lifestyle content for a large number of viewers. However, Emily’s adventures in Paris are now sadly coming to an end, as this fourth season will be its last. Due to that aspect and the fan-favorite lead performance by Lily Collins, expect plenty of Netflix subscribers to tune into the final episodes of Emily in Paris when they drop towards the beginning of the month.
A hotly anticipated Netflix original series hitting the platform in September is Twilight of the Gods. Co-created by the ever-polarizing Zack Snyder along with Jay Oliva and Eric Carrasco, Twilight of the Gods is an animated take on Norse mythology. Featuring a stacked voice cast, with familiar names like Jamie Chung, Peter Stormare, Corey Stoll, and Lauren Cohan, along with a score by Hans Zimmer, Snyder fans will surely eat this Netflix original up. It’s up in the air, however, whether or not the animated series will be a success or suffer a similar fate as the little-watched director’s cuts of Rebel Moon. Whatever the fate of Twilight of the Gods might be, the Netflix series premieres on September 19, 2024.
The biggest Netflix premiere of September 2024 might be the miniseries Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Created by Ryan Murphy as a spiritual successor to the Emmy-winning Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Monsters (plural) tackles the Menendez brothers’ murder of their parents (played by Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny). Similar to the Dahmer series before it, Monsters has a heck of an uphill battle to face. Given the tough line to walk between portrayal and exploitation, as well as the accusations of abuse that the Menendez brothers themselves have levied, it’s unclear if a voice as unsubtle as Ryan Murphy is the one to tell this particular tale. Especially since Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story received flack for perceived indelicacy and de-centering of the victims. Either way, it’s highly likely the Netflix show will be another hit for Ryan Murphy.
On the documentary front, Mr. McMahon, following the disgraced former co-founder of the WWE, releases on September 25, 2024. The docuseries comes from director Chris Smith, who helped bring Netflix subscribers the much-talked-aboutTiger Kingseries. According to Netflix, Mr. McMahon is “crafted from more than 200 hours of interviews with McMahon himself (prior to his resignation), his family members, business associates, and some of the most iconic names in wrestling history, as well as the journalists who uncovered McMahon’s allegations.” Wrestling fans will definitely want to tune in. Another documentary,Will & Harper, centers around the friendship between iconic comedian Will Ferrell and his real-life best friend, Harper Steele, as they embark on a cross-country road trip to celebrate Steele coming out as a trans woman. The festival favorite hits Netflix on September 27, 2024.
For those who are looking for comforting classics, Netflix has you covered. The first three Jaws movies just got added to the streaming service at the top of the month for those who still haven’t shaken the Shark Week itch. Another trilogy that just arrived on Netflix is the first three of The Expendables films, which all promise high-octane action for the adults in the household. Another more mature pick is Zack Snyder’s modern classic 300. For the more dramatically minded, the indie dramaI Used to be Funny, starring fan-favorite Rachel Sennott, finally makes its streaming debut on September 5, 2024, after playing in festivals last year. Inversely, if family fun is what you seek, the first Sonic movie is also now on Netflix and is a nice way to prepare for December’s theatrical release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3.
More Netflix recommendations for September 2024 include older animated classics like Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and newer animated hits like BLUE GIANT.
