Hovanesian, 60, will be buried today in White Chapel Cemetery, Troy, after an 11 a a.m. funeral service at Armenian Congregation Church in Southfield, where for many years she chaired the Thanksgiving dinner. "She regretted leaving Detroit," said another daughter, Esther Peterson, principal of Orchard Lake Middle School in West Bloomfield Township. "She truly loved her neighbors. was a great shock that anyone would attack her.

She could not believe it." Mrs. Hovanesian suffered a collapsed lung in the attack and her health deteriorated, Peterson said. Born Zvart Mouradian in Kharpoot, Armenia, she was married in 1930 to Avedis Hovanesian, an Armenian who lived in San Francisco but went home to look for a bride. They immigrated to the United States in 1931. "My mother's greatest contribution was the accomplishment of her children," Peterson said.

"Our success was based on the self-esteem that she gave us and her high expectations." Mrs. Hovanesian helped a brother emigrate from the Soviet Union about 10 years ago, and she declined offers to return to her Soviet -controlled homeland, often telling her children: "Freedom is worth all of your worldly Other survivors include a daughter, Hatch; two sisters and a grandson. Robert W. Brown, longtime lawyer Robert Wendell Brown, 87, a longtime Detroit area lawyer, died at Henry Ford Hospital on Saturday after a stroke. A Farmington Hills resident, Mr.

Brown practiced law in Detroit from 1926 to 1981, then moved his practice to Farmington Hills before retiring in 1988. His career included assisting a special grand jury investigation of Highland Park in the 1940s. Mr. Brown was a past president of the Farmington School Board, a member of the Friends of the Library in Detroit and Farmington Hills and an elder in his church. He is survived by his wife, Barbara; daughters Bonnie Travis and Mary Fletcher, three grandchildren, and two sisters.

Mr. Brown's body was donated to Wayne State University. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Dec. 10 at the First Presbyterian Church of Farmington, 26165 Farmington Road, Farmington Hills.

William Murphy, 67, an uncle of Vice President Dan Quayle and a former executive of Eli Lilly died in Baltimore on Wednesday. He had been hospitalized with a heart ailment. Birago Diop, 83, an African poet and novelist, died in Dakar, Senegal, on Saturday.

The cause of death was not specified.
