Mission Overview[]

Arthur, Micah, Bill and Sean go to meet some of the Gray boys in Rhodes to discuss a security job.

Story[]

Arthur meets the other three gang members in Rhodes for the “job”, although both he and Sean are deeply suspicious. Before they can voice any more concerns, they are suddenly ambushed by the Grays. Sean is instantly killed by a shot to the head, and Bill is shot in the shoulder. A massive shootout erupts between the remaining three outlaws and the Gray gunmen.

During the gunfight, Bill is captured by Sheriff Leigh Gray, leaving only Arthur and Micah to fight off the Grays. Both of them break into the Gunsmith's and use it as cover. After the two come out victorious, they approach the Sheriff's office and demand the release of Bill. Along with Archibald MacGregor and two other lawmen, the Sheriff comes out with a gun to Bill's head, but is promptly shot in the head and killed by Arthur. In the next few seconds, Archibald and his two allies are subsequently gunned down by Arthur, or by Micah if the player is not quick enough.

With the gunfight over, Arthur reprimands Bill and Micah for their carelessness and expresses his affection for Sean, before asking Bill to give Sean a proper burial.

Aftermath[]

Following this mission, Rhodes will be temporarily put on lockdown and the player is now unable to enter Caliga Hall without ensuring a shootout if spotted by the guards.

Gold Medal Objectives[]

  • Kill 3 lawmen in Dead Eye while saving Bill.
  • Complete using only sidearms.
  • Complete within 4 minutes 30 seconds.
  • Get 20 headshots.
  • Complete the mission without taking any health items.

Tips[]

  • If you are attempting to get the Gold Rush trophy/achievement, consider not using this mission for that goal. It is very manageable to get a silver medal for the 20 headshots, sidearms only, and not using health items but the other two requirements are so hit or miss that it isn't worth your time trying to get this gold medal. Just play the mission and enjoy the story. While entirely possible to get a gold medal with many, many attempts:
    • It is maddeningly difficult to meet the time requirement with dozens of enemies and being forced to slow walk to different areas with the group and Micah. This is not taking into account the other requirements which increase the time needed.
    • You will likely fail to the kill 3 lawmen because Micah shoots one of the lawmen even if you have three of them clearly marked with Dead Eye. You have to carefully pick guns, choose specific targets in very specific orders very quickly, and then hope Micah isn't quick on the draw. This is after you have already played most of the mission. You can't replay a checkpoint if you mess this up or you fail the no health item requirement and would have to do the mission all over again.
    • Trying to get 20 headshots using only sidearms without using any health items slows you down even if you spend most of the time in Dead Eye.
    • It is advised you try to get to the side door of the Gunsmith as early as you can (alongside reaching your headshot requirements), in order to beat the strict time limit requirement for Gold - as this will trigger Micah to enter the store and speed up the next phase of the mission.

Deaths[]

  • Sean MacGuire - Killed by a gunshot to the head from a Gray hired gun sniper.
  • Leigh Gray - Killed by Arthur Morgan while holding Bill hostage.
  • Archibald MacGregor - Killed by either Arthur or Micah after exiting the Sheriff’s Office.
  • Jock Gray - Killed by either Arthur or Micah after exiting the Sheriff's Office.
  • Rhodes Lawmen and Gray hired guns - Killed by Arthur, Micah and Bill during the shootout.

Mission Failure[]

The mission will fail if the player:

  • Kills Sean before his scripted death;
  • Assault, kills, or abandons Micah or Bill;
  • Allows Micah or Bill to be killed;
  • Dies.

Trivia[]

  • When the mission becomes available, all shops in Rhodes will be closed temporarily. Players will be able to visit them again after completing the mission "The Battle of Shady Belle".
    • The Rhodes train station is also devoid of people. This serves as a sign of the incoming ambush by the Grays.
    • Blackjack can still be played in the saloon despite being mostly empty.
    • Sean's horse, Ennis, is not seen at the start of the mission, while Bill's and Micah's horses are present, serving as an implication that MacGuire will not make it out of the mission.
  • Shortly before the mission becomes available the player can observe Sean and Jack Marston in a random camp event in the Clemens Point camp that foreshadows that something bad is about to happen to Sean: Sean and Jack find a dead white rabbit to which Sean tells him that the rabbit is a sign, though he does not know of what.[1] A white rabbit is generally considered to be a symbol of good luck, while encountering a dead white rabbit portends that someone's luck has run out.[2]
  • During the final standoff, Arthur only needs to shoot Sheriff Gray; the three deputies would be shot by Micah before they can shoot him, Arthur or Bill.
    • It is also impossible to disarm Sheriff Gray or any of the deputies during the standoff, since any accurate shot will kill them instantly.
  • Depending on Arthur's honor, he will say something different at the end of the mission.
    • If Arthur's honor is high, he will say that he misses Sean and that he was like an annoying little brother to him and that they had great fun riding together.
    • If Arthur's honor is low, he will say that Sean has been killed in an ambush and that there is still no sign of the confederate gold.
  • Two Double-barreled Shotguns can be found in this mission: the one from Sean's corpse, and another near the back door to the Gunsmith's.
  • When entering the Gunsmith's, the player is free to use the front entrance instead of the back without failing the mission, though Micah will be annoyed that his instructions were ignored.
  • The barrel of dynamite next to the Gunsmith's cannot be destroyed during this mission, and is invulnerable to all harm.
  • Before this mission is unlocked, Arthur can be informed by either Dutch (if all the other missions are completed) or by Josiah (after the mission "Friends in Very Low Places") to meet Bill and the others in Rhodes.
